Vegetative characteristics

In Adenostyles TYPES is perennial herbaceous plants . The above-ground parts of the plant are hairy depending on the species - almost bald to white tomentose. The long-stemmed leaves are largely arranged in a basal rosette. Of the few alternate leaves on the stem, the blade of the uppermost is significantly reduced.

Generative characteristics

The cup-shaped partial inflorescences are arranged in an umbrella-shaped inflorescence . The flower heads are around 1 centimeter long and contain hermaphroditic, pink tubular flowers . In the two most widespread species, the gray alpine oyster ( Adenostyles alliariae ) and green alpine ostium ( Adenostyles alpina ), there are only two to five (rarely up to ten) tubular flowers in a flower head , whereas the white felted alpine ostium ( Adenostyles leucophylla ) that occurs in the western Alps contains up to 25 tubular flowers per cup.

Occurrence

Adenostyles species thrive in the mountains of southern and central Europe. The Central European species mostly thrive in stone rubble corridors, in tall herbaceous corridors or in mixed mountain forests. Adenostyles leucophylla , which still occurs at altitudes of 3000 meters in the canton of Valais , rises the highest .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Adenostyles was established by Alexandre Henri Gabriel de Cassini (1781-1832) in 1816. A synonym for Adenostyles Cass. is Cacalia L. nom. rej. The scientific generic name Adenostyles is derived from the Greek words aden for gland and stylos for stylus, because of the club-shaped papillae on the stylus, which are not actually glands.

The genus Adenostyles belongs to the tribe Senecioneae in the subfamily of Asteroideae within the family of Asteraceae .

There are four species in the genus Adenostyles and the following subspecies:

  • Grauer Alpendost ( Adenostyles alliariae ( Gouan ) A.Kern. ): There are about two subspecies:
    • Adenostyles alliariae ( Gouan ) A. Kern. subsp. alliariae
    • Adenostyles alliariae subsp. orientalis ( Boiss. ) Greuter : It occurs only in Greece and Macedonia.
  • Grüner Alpendost ( Adenostyles alpina ( L. ) Bluff & Fingerh. , Syn .: Adenostyles glabra ( Mill. ) DC. ): There are about four subspecies:
    • Adenostyles alpina ( L. ) Bluff & Fingerh. subsp. alpina : It occurs in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Croatia.
    • Adenostyles alpina subsp. australis ( Ten. ) Greuter : It only occurs in Italy .
    • Corsica Alpendost ( Adenostyles alpina subsp. Briquetii (Gamisans) Tutin , Syn .: Adenostyles briquetii Gamisans ): This endemic occurs only in Corsica .
    • Adenostyles alpina subsp. macrocephala (Huter & al.) M.Dillenberger & Kadereit (Syn .: Adenostyles alliariae subsp. macrocephala ( Huter & al. ) Wagenitz & I.Müll. ): This endemic occurs only in Italy ( Calabria ).
    • Adenostyles alpina subsp. nebrodensis ( Wagenitz & I.Müll. ) Greuter : This endemic occurs only in Sicily .
    • Adenostyles alpina subsp. pyrenaica (Lange) M.Dillenberger & Kadereit (Syn .: Adenostyles alliariae subsp. pyrenaica ( Lange ) P.Fourn. , Adenostyles pyrenaica Lange ): It occurs only in France , Spain and Andorra .
  • Adenostyles dubia Rchb. f.
  • White felted Alpendost ( Adenostyles leucophylla ( Willd. ) Rchb. ). It only occurs in the western Alps of France , Italy and Switzerland and is found in the Ötztal in Austria .
