Vegetative characteristics

The white felted Alpendost is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 40 (rarely up to 50) centimeters. The rhizome is nodular. The stem is upright, rounded and tomentose. Some of the hair can be wiped off.

The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The uppermost leaves are often around the stem with small ears. The simple leaf blades are heart to kidney-shaped or almost triangular. The leaf blades are bald or loosely hairy, their underside is densely tomentose; Here, too, the hair can be partially wiped off. The leaf margin is serrated regularly, the teeth are as long as wide.

Generative characteristics

The cup-shaped inflorescences are arranged in compact umbelliferous whole inflorescences . There are six to ten bracts available. The 4 to 5 millimeter long bracts are hairy white, dull and often tinged with purple. Each flower head contains 12 to 24 flowers. The flowers are a more intense red than those of other Alpendost species.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The achenes are 3 to 5 millimeters long. The pappus is 5 to 7 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.

Occurrence

The white felted Alpendost occurs in the Western Alps and from the Maritime Alps to the Rhaetian Alps, i.e. in France , Switzerland and Italy . In Austria it occurs only in the Ötztal and Stubai Alps. It grows on stony, lime-poor to slightly acidic soils on rock rubble at altitudes from 1900 to 2300 meters. The white felted Alpendost is rare, it is absent in Germany.
