Alexandre Henri Gabriel de Cassini (born May 9, 1781 in Paris , † April 16, 1832 there ) was a French botanist and lawyer. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Cass. "

Life

He came from a famous family of researchers. In this family he is called Cassini V. One of his ancestors is the famous astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625–1712), who discovered the large red Jupiter spot and the Cassini divisions in the rings of Saturn. His father, Jean Dominique Cassini (Cassini IV), was an astronomer and, like his ancestors Cassini II and Cassini III, created an important and accurate map of France ( Carte de Cassini ) as a cartographer . His mother was Claude Marie Louise de Lamyre-Mory Comtesse de Neuville (1754-1791). Cassini V was interested in astronomy and botany. Above all, he was a specialist in the daisy family (Asteraceae, formerly Compositae). As a lawyer he was a magistrate and advisor to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Paris. He married his cousin Cathérine Elisabeth Agathe de Riencourt (1783-?). Since 1827 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences .

Honors

The plant genera Cassinia R.Br. and Cassiniola F. Muell. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) are named after him.
