Queen Emma Bridge
The Queen Emma Bridge ( Dutch Koningin Emmabrug ) or " Pontjesbrug " is a characteristic pontoon bridge in the center of Willemstad on Curaçao . It is floating on the " Sint Annabaai " and connects the districts of Punda and Otrabanda . The bridge is not a fixed bank connection, but can be turned to the bank from Otrabanda to allow passage between the Caribbean and St Anna Bay. This construction is unique in the world. Hence the nickname Swinging Old Lady ('turning old lady').
When the bridge opens, the other bank can be reached via a free ferry connection .
It was built in 1888 and completely renovated in 1939 and 2006. It was named after Queen Emma of the Netherlands .
At the beginning the Queen Emma Bridge was subject to duty . Only people without shoes were allowed to cross the bridge free of charge.
