Otrabanda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otrabanda , also called Otrobanda , is a district of Willemstad on Curaçao . With the opposite Punda , Otrabanda forms the inner city of Willemstad.

The district emerged from the beginning of the 18th century, and the architecture clearly has a Dutch character. There has been a pontoon bridge since 1886 , the Queen Emma Bridge to the newer parts of the city, and the Queen Juliana Bridge for car traffic since 1974 .

Otrabanda is traditionally considered a poorer part of the city, but has a rich musical tradition. Since 1997 it has been on the Unesco World Heritage List with Punda .

The Dutch entrepreneur Jacob Gelt Dekker created the five-star hotel Kurá Hulanda ( Papiamentu for "Holländischer Hof") in restored old buildings here in 2001 . Attached to the hotel is a convention center and the Kura Hulanda Museum , which deals with the history of slavery in the West Indies .
