Calagnaan Island

Calagnaan Island is a Philippine island in the province of Iloilo . It is located about 2.5 km off the east coast of Panay Island , Binuluangan Island is 2 km to the northwest , Sicogon is 1.5 km to the southeast and the Gigantes Islands are 15 km to the northeast . Calagnaan Island lies in front of Bancal Bay and is administered by the Greater Carles community .

The name of the island is derived from the words Dagna or Lagna, these come from the Visayan languages and refer to the numerous sources of drinking water. The island is inhabited and the population lives mainly from fishing . In recent years there have been repeated illegal mining activities on the island with the aim of mining gold.

The topography of the island is characterized by a mountainous terrain that rises in the interior of the island to 339 meters above sea level. The coastline of the approximately 9.5 km long and 8 km wide island is bordered by cliffs in the east and west and by sandy beaches in the north and south. To the north and south of the island there are extensive coral reefs , which block the access to the large bays in the north-west of the island. The vegetation of the island consists of a dense tropical rainforest vegetation, which has a very original character.

There are no ferry connections to the island, outrigger boats have to be rented in the port of Estancia or in Carles. The crossing takes about 30 minutes.
