The Caluya Islands are a group of islands in the Philippines .

Islands

The main island is Caluya , the six other islands are called

  • Semirara,
  • Sibato,
  • Sibay,
  • Sibol,
  • Liwagao,
  • Nagubat and
  • Panagatan Cays consisting of the three small islands Uno, Duos and Trees.

location

The group of ten islands located northwest of the island of Panay . The archipelago lies at the transition from Sulu Lake to the Tablas Strait in the north and the Sibuyan Sea in the northeast, about 40 km from the island of Panay. The Panagatan Cays are about 50 km west of the main island. Semirara is the largest island with approx. 55 km² and is located approx. 33 km northwest of Caluya and the tourist hotspot Boracay is approx. 45 km east of the archipelago.

The archipelago can be reached via the Centro Weste harbor in Libertad , the journey time by ferry takes about three hours. The archipelago is administered by the municipality of the same name Caluya , which belongs to the Antique province .

economy

The archipelago is surrounded by numerous coral reefs and seagrass meadows , which have a great diversity of species. In the waters off the Barangay Poblacion lies the 5 hectare Caluya Marine Sanctuary. The seagrass meadows are used sustainably by the local population; the Seaweed Cultivation Program was initiated in the mid-1980s. Is on Semirara one of the largest coal - mines in Southeast Asia , the Panian mine. This is exploited by the Semirara Mining Corporation.
