The Caticlan Airport (Filipino: Paliparang Godofredo P. Ramos ) is an airport in the province of Aklan on the island of Panay in the Western Visayas region ( Philippines ).

The airport, located 45 minutes by flight south of Manila , is often referred to as Caticlan Airport or Boracay Airport .

The fifth busiest airport in the Philippines has the IATA code MPH and the ICAO code RPVE. The airport has been classified as a Class 2 Principal Airport domestic airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines .

Infrastructure

The airport originally had a runway with a length of 950 m and a width of 30 m. The airport terminal consists of a small baggage claim area and a boarding area with 120 seats. Due to the very short runway, the airport could only be approached by smaller propeller planes or by jets smaller than Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 for a long time . The airport was therefore mainly served by De Havilland DHC-8 of Airphil Express , ATR 72 of Cebu Pacific , Dornier 328 , Let 410 of Tigerair Philippines and various Cessna models of the 400 series.

After the runway had been extended to 1,800 m, an Airbus A320 from Philippine Airlines landed in Caticlan for the first time on November 18, 2016 .

Incidents

  • On 19 July 2005, a set Jak-40 of the Inter Iceland Airlines ( air vehicle registration RP-C2803 ) on the Caticlan Airport in front of the 950-meter-long runway. During the rescue attempt, the undercarriage collapsed, whereupon the machine was totaled; it could not be made airworthy again with the resources available on site. None of the 23 people on board were killed. In 2012 the wreck was bought and sunk off the nearby holiday island of Boracay as an attraction for divers.
  • Air traffic was restricted in 2009 after two Xi'an MA60s operated by Zest Airways had an accident while landing on the runway, which is only 950 m long. As a result, the supervisory authority issued a take-off and landing ban for machines with more than 50 seats and requirements for the airport were issued. The runway had to be extended by 100 meters and a hill that was in the direction of the approach had to be removed. After the work was completed, the airport was opened again. The airlines Airphil Express and Cebu Pacific resumed operations in 2010, but Zest Airways stayed away from the airport.
