The Daniel Z. Romualdez (Tacloban) Airport ( ICAO code : RPVA , IATA code : TAC ) is an airport in the Philippines in the province of Leyte on the island of the same name in the Eastern Visayas region . The airport is located on a headland at the east end of Cancabato Bay about three kilometers east of downtown Tacloban City .

The airport is classified as a Class 1 Principal Airport domestic airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines .

The airport is named after Daniel Zialcita Romualdez, a former spokesman for the Philippine House of Representatives and a relative of Imelda Marcos .

During the Second World War , the airport served as a base for the US Air Force from late 1944 to 1945 .

Typhoon 2013

On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and severely damaged the airport building. The airport was partially reopened for flights on November 11, 2013. Air traffic from sunrise to sunset was limited to military, rescue and relief flights, as well as authorized government flights, limited commercial flights and helicopter flights. A maximum of two machines could be processed on the ground at the same time. Landing permits were not granted as long as two machines were on the ground. The maximum allowed standing time on the floor was one hour. These restrictions initially applied until November 30, 2013. The first passenger flights to Manila and Cebu were resumed on November 14, 2013.

Due to the damage caused by the typhoon, the Philippine aviation authority CAAP restricted the use of the airport to small turboprop aircraft in September 2014 . Larger aircraft, such as the Airbus A320, were only allowed to take off and land in Tacloban after the asphalt surface of the runway had been completely renewed. This approval was given after the repair work was completed on May 7, 2015.
