Granville SkyTrain Station in the Dunsmuir Tunnel

The Dunsmuir Tunnel is a rail tunnel under downtown Vancouver , Canada , which is serviced by two SkyTrain lines , the Expo Line and the Millennium Line . It is 1,396 meters long, lies six to 24 meters below the surface and has two stations, Burrard and Granville . The west portal is halfway between the Waterfront station and Burrard station , and the east portal is right next to the Stadium-Chinatown station .

The tunnel was built in 1932 by the Northern Construction Company. It originally connected the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway at Burrard Inlet with the freight yard at False Creek . The construction cost was 1.6 million CAD . The east portal was then a little further south than it is today.

BC Transit, the predecessor of the TransLink transport company , took over the tunnel in the early 1980s to use it for the SkyTrain route built with a view to the Expo 86 world exhibition . The tunnel only offers space for a single track, but has a large clearance profile . For this reason, the tunnel was rebuilt by dividing it into two levels so that it now accommodates two tracks on top of each other.
