William Brent Hinds (born January 14, 1974 in Pelham , Alabama ) is an American guitarist and singer . He is a founding member of the band Mastodon and is involved in several other projects.

Career

Hinds first worked as a carpenter before moving to Atlanta to become a musician. There he met the current mastodon bassist Troy Sanders and joined Sanders' then band Four Hour Fogger . The band released only one single and made a name for itself, among other things, because all members appeared naked or in bikinis . After the band broke up, Hinds and Sanders met musicians Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor at a concert by the band High on Fire . The band Mastodon was founded together with singer Eric Saner. After Saner left the band, Hinds took over the vocals together with Troy Sanders.

In 2007, Hinds and Bill Kelliher won the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in the Best Shredder category . On September 9, 2007, during the MTV Video Music Awards , a dispute broke out between the drunken Hinds and the system-of-a-down bassist Shavo Odadjian and his companion, Reverend William Burgh . A brawl broke out in which Hinds suffered severe head injuries, a broken nose , two blue eyes and cerebral haemorrhage . He then had to be treated in hospital for a long time. At the 2014 Grammy Awards , Hinds was expelled from the Staples Center in Los Angeles "because he couldn't behave." In 2018 Mastodon were awarded the Grammy in the Best Metal Performance category.

In addition to Mastodon, Brent Hinds is involved in various projects. His projects Fiend Without a Face and West End Motel released a split double album in May 2011 . A year later he founded the band Giraffe Tongue Orchestra together with the Alice-in-Chains singer William DuVall and the guitarist of the band The Dillinger Escape Plan Ben Weinman, which released their debut album in September 2016. Together with the drummer of the band Tool Danny Carey founded the project Hinds Legend of the Seagullmen . This project first released two songs in 2015 before the debut album was released on February 9, 2018. He has appeared as a guest musician on the albums of bands such as CKY , The Dillinger Escape Plan and Mouth of the Architect .

In addition, he appeared in a small role as an actor . So he worked in the film Jonah Hex in 2010 . Five years later he appeared with his bandmates from Mastodon as extras in the television series Game of Thrones . In the Hartheim episode , the musicians can be seen as wildlings . 2017 followed another appearance in the series Game of Thrones in the episode The Dragon and the Wolf .

In June 2015, an interview by Guitar Player magazine with Brent Hinds caused a sensation, in which Hinds stated that he hated heavy metal and only played the music because he thought that type of music was rebellious. At the end of 2016, Hinds accused the editors of Guitar Player for taking his statements out of context. According to his own statement, Hinds only said in the original interview that he would not like most heavy metal.

Brent Hinds has been married since May 2017.
