William Bradley DuVall (born September 6, 1967 in Washington, DC ) is an American musician who is best known as the lead singer of Alice in Chains . He is also co-founder, lead singer, guitarist and text writer of the band Comes with the Fall . Since 2016 he has been the singer of the US supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra .

biography

Early Years (1983-1989)

William DuVall first played in Atlanta with a hardcore band called Awareness Void of Chaos. In 1983 he co-founded the hardcore band Neon Christ, where he was already active as a guitarist and lyricist. The band played with groups like Corrosion of Conformity and Bl'ast and released two albums and also got involved politically. In 1986 it disbanded. In 2004 there was a re-union for one gig. After the breakup of Neon Christ, DuVall was briefly the second guitarist with the Northern Californian Bl'ast, where he also contributed a little to the album It's in My Blood , but he left the band before the actual recordings. In the late 1980s he played in a Jimi Hendrix- inspired band called No Walls and did his college degree in philosophy .

1990s and 2000s

DuVall co-wrote the song I Know in 1994 for Dionne Farris, also from Atlanta . The song received an ASCAP award. In the late 1990s, DuVall founded the band Madfly with Nico Constantine , Bevan Davies and Jeffery Blount. Here, too, he was again a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Two albums, Get the Silver and White Hot in the Black , were released by DuVall's own label DVL Recordings and distributed by Mercury Records / PolyGram . In 1999 the three musicians founded Comes with the Fall , Adam Stanger joined them as bassist. The first self-titled CD was released in 2000, The Year Is One followed in 2001. The band also played as support for the Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell on his degradation trip tours in 2001 and 2002. A live album and a live DVD. The Reckoning was released as an EP in 2006, the album Beyond the Last Light was released in 2007, both on DuVall's label.

Alice in Chains

After the original singer of Alice in Chains, Layne Staley , died on April 5, 2002, the collaboration with Jerry Cantrell intensified when he became increasingly musically active again. In 2007 the band went with DuVall together with Velvet Revolver and Kill Hannah on the The ReEvolution tour , which took place in two parts, in Europe and the USA. Another tour led to Australia. After DuValls official entry as lead singer, work began on the album Black Gives Way to Blue , which was released on September 29, 2009. DuVall also sometimes plays the second guitar live at Alice in Chains, often an ESP Hybrid or a Gibson Les Paul .

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra

In early 2016, DuVall was introduced as the new singer of the supergroup Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, which released their debut album Broken Lines in September of the same year .
