history

Ben Weinman

The band was formed in 2011 by guitarist Ben Weinman from the band The Dillinger Escape Plan . Weinman first worked with Brent Hinds from the band Mastodon . According to Hinds, both bands have toured many times and both musicians regularly played together in the backstage area . Later came the former Jane's Addiction- bassist Eric Avery and former The Mars Volta - drums Jon Theodore so. Initially the musicians wanted to win William DuVall from the band Alice in Chains as a singer. DuVall had to cancel due to lack of time. As a replacement, the actress Juliette Lewis was added as a singer on the mediation of Ben Weinman .

Brent Hinds

In March 2015, in an interview with Sirius XM radio station, Ben Weinman announced that bassist Eric Avery and drummer Jon Theodore had left the band. Theodore was too busy with his band Queens of the Stone Age . The musicians were replaced by Dethklok bassist Pete Griffin and former The Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen. The collaboration with Juliette Lewis didn't work well, according to Brent Hinds, and it ended. After Brent Hinds met William DuVall again in a supermarket , Hinds played the new songs for him.

In February 2016, William DuVall was finally introduced as the new permanent singer of the Giraffe Tongue Orchestra. The band name came about when Brent Hinds was in a zoo in Sydney . He got a banana from his backpack, which was stolen from him by a giraffe . The animal peeled the banana with its tongue and ate it. The name suffix Orchestra is inspired by the band Mahavishnu Orchestra . The band played their first concerts on August 27th and 28th, 2016 at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in England . The debut album Broken Lines was released on September 23, 2016 and entered the Swiss album charts at number 89 .

At the Loudwire Music Awards 2016 , the band was nominated in the Best New Artist category. The award went to the band Shallow Side . In the same year Blood Moon was nominated in the Revolver Music Awards in the category Best Film / Video , but the award went to the band Gojira . A small tour through North America was planned for December 2016. However, this had to be canceled after Brent Hinds broke his leg in a motorcycle accident.

style

The band mixes the various influences of the main bands from the musicians involved. Giraffe Tongue Orchestra largely dispense with the verse - refrain- patterns traditional in rock music . According to Ben Weinman, the band shouldn't sound like any of the other bands of the musicians involved. Rather, the music should "represent the individual styles of the individual members". Weinman added that there were no rules for the Giraffe Tongue Orchestra. Allmusic's Rob Wacey described Giraffe Tongue Orchestra as an alternative metal band that combined elements of hard rock and progressive metal . Lothar Gerber from the German magazine Metal Hammer described the band's music as “completely unique, versatile rock that is sometimes straight forward, sometimes tricky and sometimes even extremely danceable”. In his review for the album Broken Lines , Ronny Bittner from the German magazine Rock Hard wrote that "the colorful variety of styles and the subliminal madness of Faith No More and System of a Down makes you think".
