Report by Leopold Mozart

Leopold Mozart met Baron Karl Ernst Bagge in Paris and wrote in his travel notes:

“I have to give Wolfgang a picture or a description of Baron Bache or Bagge (I don't know how he writes himself). He is, as far as I know, a poor baron from Prussia or the local area and married a very rich hatter's daughter in Paris. After all, all kinds of quarrels arose between them, and after we got home, the two married couples became involved in atrocities and such trials with each other that, as I heard, the woman was even supposed to have been put in a convent. He is a passionate lover of music. He always gave concerts in his house, and maybe still gives them. He also had a few people as two French horn players (among them was Heina), two Hautboists, a double bass, which he paid for at all times, but gave them little; but they could do it because it is permanent. In addition, he made do with all the foreign virtuosos who all came to him, since they could relax in the foreign city with his advice and [through him] could make further acquaintances. Even the Parisian virtuosos often come there; some, if they have something new, can try it there; others to hear strange pieces of music there because he is very keen to get new pieces of music; and finally they also come there to have the opportunity to hear new, foreign virtuosos "
