Pierre Gaviniès (Gavinies) (born May 11, 1728 in Bordeaux , † September 8, 1800 in Paris ) was a French violinist and composer .

Life

Pierre Gaviniès was the son of violin maker François Gaviniès and one of the most important French violin personalities of the 18th century. At the age of thirteen he shone alongside Joseph-Barnabé Saint-Sevin (1727–1803) called l'Abbé le fils in a duo by Jean-Marie Leclair in the Concert Spirituel . Even at a very young age he was one of the sought-after virtuosos in Paris, he even refused to serve in the royal chapel. As a young man, he is said to have been sentenced to one year in prison for an affair with a noble lady-in-waiting and it was during this time that he composed his famous romance . In the 1760s he found unprecedented popularity with his compositions and concerts. Even Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived at his concerts. His students valued him as a teacher and because of his humanity in dealing. They included, for example, Nicolas Capron , Simon Leduc , Marie-Alexandre Guénin , Louis-Henry Paisible (1745–1781), Antoine-Laurent Baudron (1742–1834), Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges and the later music publisher Jean-Jérôme Imbault (1758-1832).

He had a long and fruitful collaboration with the concert events of the Concert Spirituel, which he directed from 1773 to 1777 with François-Joseph Gossec and Simon Leduc. During this period the symphony concertante reached its climax. Giovanni Battista Viotti recognized him as the "French Tartini ".

He published his sonatas in the baroque tradition, only provided with a figured bass. These compositions represent a stylistic transition from late baroque to classical.

In post-revolutionary Paris from 1795 he was one of the violin teachers at the newly founded Paris Conservatory alongside Pierre Rode , Pierre Baillot and Rodolphe Kreutzer .
