The large village Voka ( Estonian Voka alevik ) is part of the rural municipality Toila ( Toila vald ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 919 inhabitants (as of September 19, 2012). It is in close proximity to the Baltic Sea beach.

The large village ( alevik ) was created in 1975 from the amalgamation of numerous small villages. The former village of Kolluta formed the core. Settlement has been documented since 1426.

Good from Voka

The estate of the councilor of Narva Johann Fock was built there in 1626 . He gave it the name Fockenhof . This later became the Estonian-speaking name Voka.

In 1712 the post station on the important connection road between the Russian capital Saint Petersburg via Tartu and the Livonian capital Riga was put into operation.

In 1781 the estate was bought by the English baroness and socialite Elizabeth Chudleigh (1720–1788), who had become one of the richest women in the Russian Empire by inheritance. She founded a schnapps factory and a pharmacy there.

After her death, ownership passed to the Baltic German aristocratic Wilcken family . At the beginning of the 19th century the two-storey mansion was built in the classicism style , one of the most magnificent in all of Estonia. In the middle of the 19th century the park was enlarged and numerous new botanical varieties were added.

The Baltic German scientist Alexander Theodor von Middendorff (1815–1894) was a frequent guest on the estate . The polar explorer Eduard von Toll (1858–1902), who was married to a daughter from the Wilcken house, also lived there. Two of his children are buried in the family cemetery.

Voka mõis was completely destroyed in 1944 during the Second World War. There are still outbuildings.
