Mastbos is an approximately 570 hectare forest area south of the Dutch city of Breda in Noord-Brabant .

history

The name Mastbos is synonymous with Bos van pijnbomen ("forest of pine trees"). At the beginning of the 16th century, conifers ( naaldbomen ) were imported from Germany. The mastbos (literally: "mast forest") near Breda was the first large forest with conifers of various species in the Netherlands . Over the centuries, supporting piles were for the wood of trees mining in Limburg and masts for the Dutch East India Company and the Spanish fleet made. It was also used to expand the Kasteel van Breda ( Breda Castle). Due to the presence in greater numbers Scots pines (Dutch: grove dennen ) in North Brabant "Mastenhout" (literally Mast wood , something like: wood for ship masts ) are called, the forest was Mastbos called.

Count Heinrich III. von Nassau had the forest created around 1515 for the production of wood and as a hunting area for the princely family ( Huis van Oranje ). Mastbos was owned by the family until 1899 . After 1899 the forest belonged to the state forest administration (staatsbosbeheer).

At the beginning of the 20th century a horse-drawn tram line from Breda Central Station to Bouvigne was built, but it no longer exists today. The transport operation to "Breda-Mastbosch" began on July 3, 1901.

Currently the mastbos is mainly used for recreation. Felling of timber is rarely found. The forest as a production facility for ship masts was no longer necessary by the beginning of the 20th century, Mastbos became a recreation and leisure area. For example, three campsites ( kampeerterrein ) have been set up in Mastbos, which are close to walking and cycling paths. The campsites are free, but cannot be used for more than 72 hours.
