The Allgemeine Musikische Zeitung ( AmZ for short ) is one of the most important music journals of the 19th century, along with the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik . It was founded in 1798 in Leipzig by Friedrich Rochlitz and the music publisher Gottfried Christoph Härtel , in whose publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel it was published.

  • 1798–1848 General musical newspaper , 50 years, publisher: Breitkopf and Härtel, Leipzig. At the same time the intelligence sheet for the general musical newspaper was published . In addition to Rochlitz (1798–1818) and Härtel (1819–1827), Gottfried Wilhelm Fink (1827–1842), Moritz Hauptmann (1843–1846) and Johann Christian Lobe (1846–1848) served as editors.
  • 1863–1865 General musical newspaper new series , 3 volumes, publisher: Selmar Bagge , publisher: Breitkopf und Härtel.
  • 1866–1868 Leipziger Allgemeine musical newspaper , 3 years, editors: Selmar Bagge (until 1868), Robert Eitner (1868), Friedrich Chrysander (1868f.), Publisher: Rieter-Biedermann , Leipzig and Winterthur.
  • 1869–1882 Allgemeine musical newspaper , 14 volumes, editors: Chrysander (until 1871, 1875–1882), Joseph Müller (1871–1874).

The magazine played a major role in the careers of Haydn and Beethoven , both of whom received a free copy of the magazine. She also contributed to Mozart becoming the third of the great Viennese classics after his untimely death .
