Gottfried Christoph Härtel (born January 27, 1763 in Schneeberg , † July 25, 1827 in Cotta ) was a German music publisher .

Life

Härtel, who came from the Ore Mountains , was the youngest son of the Schneeberg mayor Dr. jur. Franz Christoph Härtel (born January 25, 1714 in Schneeberg; † November 6, 1767 ibid.) And his wife Johanna Concordia Hausdörfer (born January 13, 1727 in Chemnitz; † October 5, 1806 in Schneeberg). He attended the Latin school in Annaberg and, on April 3, 1780, moved into the University of Leipzig as a mentor to the young Count von Schönburg . Here he had the rights studied what he lectures on political science , philology and aesthetics visited. After a time as a private tutor in DresdenIn 1789 he became the teacher and private secretary of Countess Auguste von Schönburg-Glauchau . During this time he was active in literature, for which he returned to Leipzig and worked in the Baumgärtnerische bookshop. In 1795 he was accepted as a partner in the music publisher founded by Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf (1695–1777) in Leipzig . Due to Breitkopf's financial difficulties, the following year he became sole owner of the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house, which still exists today . Furthermore, in 1798, Härtel founded the Allgemeine musical newspaper, the first of its kind . He also published the Leipzig literary newspaper from 1812 . In 1806 he founded a piano factory .

Härtel was one of the most important publishers of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827); both were also linked by extensive correspondence.

Härtel married Amalie Eleonore Klötzer (born January 4, 1781 in Leipzig; † March 31, 1811 in Cotta) in Leipzig's Thomaskirche on December 23, 1800 , the daughter of the Leipzig city court copyist Johann Heinrich Klötzer (died August 29, 1727 in Leipzig; † October 27, 1794 ibid.) And his wife Eleonore Christiane Walburg (died October 30, 1749 in Leipzig; † May 26, 1828 ibid.). The marriage resulted in two sons and four daughters, one of whom died young.
