Wolfgang Schmieder

Wolfgang Schmieder (born May 29, 1901 in Bromberg , Province of Posen ; † November 8, 1990 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German librarian and musicologist .

Life

Schmieder studied musicology, literary history and art history at the University of Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1927 and worked as an assistant at the musicological institute until 1930. In 1931 he passed the librarianship examination in Leipzig and then worked as a librarian at the library of the TH Dresden . From 1933 to 1942 he was an archivist and music librarian at the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house in Leipzig. From 1942 until his retirement in 1963 he worked at the city ​​and university library in Frankfurt am Main , since 1946 as head of their newly founded music department. He then lived in Freiburg im Breisgau until his death.

Schmieder is best known for the Bach Works Directory (BWV) he created between 1946 and 1950, in which he cataloged the works of Johann Sebastian Bach . The Bach works directory has since become a practically worldwide standard for musicians and enthusiasts.
