Adolf Thürlings

Adolf Thürlings (born July 1, 1844 in Kaldenkirchen , † February 14, 1915 in Bern ) was a German Old Catholic and Christian Catholic theologian , liturgical scholar and author of the first missal in German , which was intended for worship .

Life

Thürlings came from Kaldenkirchen on the Lower Rhine , which is now a district of Nettetal in North Rhine-Westphalia , and was the son of Peter Heinrich Adolph Thürlings, grammar school teacher and organist, and his wife Maria Gertrud nee. Schwippert. He studied theology and musicology at the University of Bonn . He was ordained priest in 1867. From 1868 he was parish vicar in Heinsberg . After joining the Old Catholic Church, he was suspended and excommunicated in 1871 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Paulus Melchers . From 1872 to 1887 he was an old Catholic pastor in Kempten (Allgäu) .

From the University of Munich , he was in 1877 for Dr. phil. PhD . From 1887 he taught as a professor for systematic theology at the Christian Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bern . Thürlings was dean of his faculty several times and rector of the University of Bern from 1906 to 1907. He also taught liturgy and church music. He is considered the creator of the liturgy of the German Old Catholic Church, in whose clergy he remained throughout his life, and wrote the hymn book of the Christian Catholic Church and the associated organ books, which appeared in 1893 . Thürlings also published on musicological topics. In 1908 he became Dr. hc theol. of the University of Bern.

On March 17, 1888, Thürlings married Brunhilde Böhner, harpist in the Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra and later harp teacher at the Cologne Conservatory. The couple had a son, Adolf Thürlings (1889–1963).
