Karl Emil von Schafhäutl (born February 16, 1803 in Ingolstadt , †  February 25, 1890 in Munich ) was a German physicist , geologist and music theorist.

Life

Schafhäutl studied mathematics and natural sciences and became a scriptor at the University Library in Munich in 1827 . His first treatises appeared under the pseudonym Emil Pellisov ( pellis ovis = Latin sheep skin ). In 1834 he turned to England , where he later set up a laboratory in Swansea to study the puddling process . In 1836, Schafhäutl invented a device for puddling wrought iron and discovered the presence of nitrogen in iron(1838). His treatise On the Causes of Steam Boiler Explosions (1841) led to the award of the large silver Telford Medal .

In April 1841 Schafhäutl returned to Munich, where in 1842 he became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Science and founded the Geognostic Cabinet , of which he became a curator . In 1843 he became associate professor and in 1844 full professor of geology , mining and metallurgy. In 1849 he was made senior librarian.

Schafhäutl also researched the geology of the Alps and wrote numerous treatises. In addition, he dealt with technical-acoustic and musical investigations and invented, among other things, the vibration photometer (1840), a phonometer (1853) and a pocket phonometer (1860).
