Franz von Holstein
Franz von Holstein (born February 16, 1826 in Braunschweig , † May 22, 1878 in Leipzig ) was a German composer .
Life
He was the son of the ducal Braunschweig colonel and war councilor Werner von Holstein (1784-1857).
Holstein came from the cadet corps on October 6, 1845 as a second lieutenant in the infantry regiment and took part in the campaign against Denmark in 1848/49 . As a prime lieutenant, he was appointed adjutant of the 2nd Landwehr Battalion on March 18, 1850 , until Holstein finally resigned on March 11, 1853.
During his training as an officer he composed the opera Two Nights in Venice as well as songs and ballads. In 1853 he came to Leipzig, where he studied counterpoint with Moritz Hauptmann and had piano lessons with Ignaz Moscheles . After stays in Rome , Berlin and Paris , he took over the management of the Bach Society in Leipzig and was a founding member of the Bach Society. In addition to three operas, he wrote two overtures , a cantata , chamber music works and piano pieces and had an excellent reputation as a song composer.
Holstein was buried in the Neuer Johannisfriedhof (now Lapidarium Alter Johannisfriedhof ) in Leipzig. In Leipzig, his wife Hedwig, daughter of the city councilor Rudolf Julius Salomon , set up the so-called Holstein-Stift , a foundation to support poor music students.
