Friedrich Tröstler and Fürstenau were the first lecturers at the newly founded private conservatory in 1856 . In addition to composition, he mostly gave flute lessons there.

After the war of 1870 , Fürstenau slowly gave up all offices and retired into private life. Except for the office of librarian of the royal music collection in Dresden, which he held until 1889. His successor was the royal music director of the Dresden court opera Carl August Riccius (1830-1893).
