Gottfried Wilhelm Fink (born March 8, 1783 in Sulza (formerly Stadtsulza), † August 27, 1846 in Leipzig ) was a German composer , music theorist, Protestant clergyman and poet .

Life

From 1804 to 1808 he studied theology in Leipzig, where he joined the Corps Lusatia ; at the same time first attempts were made in composition and poetry. Most of his song compositions can be assigned to this time period. From 1811 onwards he held the office of vicar in Leipzig for a number of years , and also founded an educational institution, of which he was director until 1829. At the beginning of the 19th century he was already working on the general musical newspaper . From 1827 on he held the post of editor-in-chief of this magazine, which he held for 15 years.

From 1838 Fink worked as a lecturer at the University of Leipzig until he became a private lecturer in musicology at the university there in 1841. In the same year he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and a year later he was appointed university music director.

Gottfried Wilhelm Fink was valued as a music theorist and composer throughout his life. He has received numerous honors and awards both at home and abroad. In 1838 the Philosophical Faculty of Leipzig University also awarded him an honorary doctorate.

His compositional work is mainly characterized by songs , song collections and ballads . The texts for his song compositions come mainly from himself. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the service of the organist, teacher and church music director Friedrich Wilke, he created "a specially composed and composed song in honor" of the jubilee. In addition, he made a name for himself as the author of important works in music theory and music history.

He was best known, however, as the editor of the Musikalisches Hausschatzes der Deutschen (a collection of about 1,000 songs and chants) and the Deutsche Liedertafel (a collection of polyphonic male chants ).
