Günther Kraft

Günther Kraft (born April 2, 1907 in Suhl , † September 20, 1977 in Weimar ) was a German musicologist and university professor .

Life

Kraft studied musicology, German literature and art history in Jena from 1935 to 1937 and musicology and music education in Berlin from 1937 to 1940 . In 1938 he received his doctorate in Jena on the life and work of Johannes Steuerlein , in 1940 he passed the state examination for artistic teaching at secondary schools and became a student trainee . From 1941 he conducted landscape research in Thuringia , which he continued in 1946 after serving in the war and being a prisoner of war. In 1949, Kraft followed a call to teach school music and music history at the State University of Music Weimar . In 1951 he became a lecturer in musicology and founded the archive and institute for folk music research , which collected the bequests of Franz Magnus Böhme , Karl Goepfart and others. In 1952 he was appointed professor of music history and his habilitation in 1963 at the University of Halle (Saale) with a dissertation on Bach - Genealogy . From 1964 to 1971 he was first honorary director, then director of the Bachhaus Eisenach . In 1972 Günther Kraft retired . His estate is now in the University Archive / Thuringian State Music Archive Weimar .
