Anton Rée

Anton Rée (born November 9, 1815 in Hamburg ; † January 13, 1891 Hamburg) was a Hamburg reform pedagogue and politician.

The son of the Jewish banker Berend Isaac Rée and Johanna, b. Nathanson. was educated by private tutors and then studied at the University of Kiel philosophy .

From 1838 he worked as a teacher and from 1848 until his death as director at the Israelitische Freischule , the later foundation school from 1815 on the Zeughausmarkt in Hamburg's Neustadt district , which was converted into a cross-denominational secondary school on his initiative. Rées endeavored to establish a primary school system in Hamburg that was open to all children regardless of religion and social origin. a. led to the introduction of compulsory schooling in 1871 due to the activities of Rées in Hamburg .

Rée was elected to the Hamburg Constituent Assembly in 1848 and, along with Gabriel Riesser , with whom he worked closely, was one of the most important advocates of Jewish emancipation . In the first elections for Hamburg citizenship , Rée won a mandate in 1859. He remained a member of the citizenry until 1871. From 1867 to 1870 Rée was a member of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation . From 1881 to 1884 he was a member of the Reichstag and represented the third Hamburg constituency.

Honors

After Rée's death, the foundation school was renamed Anton-Rée-Realschule , it was closed in 1933. A path in the Ohlsdorf district was named Réesweg; the name was changed during the Nazi era in 1938, the former Réesweg has since been named after the Hamburg senator and colonial politician Justus Strandes .

Today a school in the Neuallermöhe district and a street in the Hammerbrook district bear the name of Rées.
