Paul Rudolf Backhaus

Paul Rudolf Backhaus (born August 29, 1879 in Leipzig , † September 19, 1955 in Leipzig) was a German sculptor .

His father was the builder Otto Ferdinand Willibald Backhaus , his mother Minna Auguste Backhaus nee. Ullrich . He is buried in the Gohliser Friedhof in Leipzig in a listed grave from the middle of the 17th century.

From 1900 to 1907 Backhaus studied with Johannes Schilling at the Dresden Art Academy . In 1907 he took part in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition with three works : with the plaster figure “Psyche” (Hall 16, serial no. 954), the bronze medal “Awakening Girl” (Hall 43, 1889) and the silver medal “ Girl with a Mirror ”(1889). From 1908 to 1928 he lived and worked in the Künstlerhaus Dresden-Loschwitz . Backhaus designed several war memorials after the First World War . During the time of National Socialism he worked as a construction draftsman in Leipzig.

A gargoyle he designed at Schweinsburg Castle can still be viewed today. The Geipel Foundation donated the following bronze figures to the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts : "Donkey" (1909, 25.2 cm × 27.0 cm × 8.5 cm), "Running Bear" (1911, 24.5 cm × 41, 5 cm × 17.0 cm), "Girl with a Necklace" (1912, height 57.8 cm, plinth 20.5 cm) and "Eva" (1921, 22.0 cm × 8.3 cm × 8.0 cm ). The Dresden City Gallery has a plaster relief "Madonna".
