History and development

The Zeughausmarkt was created in the 17th century when the Neustadt was expanded . The name goes back to an artillery armory built in 1661 on the east side of the square. The two-storey half-timbered building, around 40 meters long and 13 meters wide, was demolished in 1826. From 1823 to 1827, as part of Hamburg's defenses and the demolition of the neighboring defenses, the square was given a peripheral development on the west side designed by Carl Ludwig Wimmel . Today's houses 33 to 38 date from this time.

The English Church, which was dedicated to Thomas A Becket (1118–1170), Archbishop of Canterbury, has been located near the site of the former artillery armory since 1836 (construction began) and is the purest classical church building in the Hamburg area.

School building, built in 1915 according to plans by Fritz Schumacher

From 1815 the Israelitische Freischule was located on the southwest corner of the square , the building of which was replaced in 1915 by a brick building designed by Fritz Schumacher . The building has been a listed building since 1982 . After several changes of use, it is now the State Trade School Textile and Clothing (G 4) under the name Anna-Siemsen-Schule .

Most of the Zeughausmarkt is now used as a parking lot.
