Art in public space in Frankfurt am Main

In Frankfurt am Main, around 350 sculptures and murals can be seen in public spaces , for which the portal provides brief profiles with information about the work of art, its location and the artists.
history
Even if the idea of art in public space has only recently emerged, there were already a number of publicly accessible works of art in the broadest sense in Frankfurt am Main before the 19th century. These included the public Frankfurt fountains and the exterior decoration of public and private houses and churches.
In the 19th century, a number of monuments were created, partly financed by the Frankfurt bourgeoisie as a donation. The focus of Frankfurt art, however, was clearly on the art collections and museums, which mostly went back to private initiatives and later often passed on to foundations or public institutions.
Between the beginning of the 1930s and the end of the 1960s, the Kunst am Bau programs created a series of works of art in public spaces. This was particularly true in the 1950s and 1960s. For the first time, this program was used to specifically promote works of art in public spaces. The works created in this way, however, were often of lesser artistic rank and were serial productions. The programs were criticized as a "job creation program for regional artists" and the obligation of building owners to invest part of the construction costs in art on site was abolished in 1967 at the federal level.
While some municipalities are continuing such programs and setting up funding programs for art in public spaces, developments in Frankfurt lagged behind. After the local elections in Hesse in 1977 , Walter Wallmann (CDU) was elected Lord Mayor of Frankfurt. During his tenure, a clear change began in urban development and cultural policy. Culture was now understood as a central “soft” location factor that should increase the attractiveness of the city and strengthen the population's identification with the city. On the one hand, the head of the cultural department, Hilmar Hoffmann , pursued a policy of investing in highly cultural objects such as the reconstruction of the Alte Oper and the Museumufer , but also a policy of improving the cityscape through art in public spaces.
In addition to the work of the Office for Science and Art and the Office for Overall Municipal Development and Urban Planning, private actors came on the scene at the same time to help develop art in public space in Frankfurt.
This was initially the Förderverein Schöneres Frankfurt e. V. In 1978/79 this association donated the Lucae fountain in front of the Alte Oper and in 1983 the Giò Pomodoros fountain on Goetheplatz . In 1986 Eduardo Chillida's work Ein Haus für Goethe was presented to the public. In 1990 the annual exhibition Contemporary Art in Urban Areas took place, in which 14 artists exhibited their works in the public space of the city center.
In addition, there were Frankfurt companies, such as the banks and insurance companies based there, who bought and set up a large number of works of art in public spaces, often in the vicinity of their own high-rises, from well-known artists with their own funds.
Internet portal of the city's cultural office
The Internet portal art in public space Frankfurt of the cultural office of the city of Frankfurt is supposed to show the many sculptures, fountains and sculptures in public space in Frankfurt both to the residents and to the tourists and to bring them closer through pictures and descriptions of their locations.
content
About 350 works of art by more than 170 artists are presented on the portal, which can be found at over 220 locations in 32 Frankfurt districts. On the homepage, 18 of these works are presented in pictures, to which explanations can be called up immediately. Access is also possible according to several criteria: structured according to districts or locations, according to artist, according to the type of work (category) or via the name of the respective object.
Each work has a kind of profile that provides information about the artist, the location and the date of the object. In addition to a colored illustration, a brief description is given to help you understand the work. By integrating Google Maps , the route to the location can be traced.
The offer is the publicly visible part of an inventory platform for the works of art in public space in Frankfurt. It was created by the Fine Arts Department of the Department of Culture in collaboration with the cultural anthropologist and online editor Hella Bissantz and the Institute for New Media (INM).
Pilot project: QR code
An additional one-year pilot project that began on June 8, 2011 has provisionally selected 23 objects, with the exception of one, all on the ramparts , which have been equipped with information signs with a QR code next to brief information . This code can be read out using a smartphone and the corresponding app . This contains detailed information about the work of art in question.
