history

The name Berger Straße is derived from the village of Bergen , which has formed the northern part of Frankfurt's Bergen-Enkheim district since it was incorporated in 1977 . Berger Straße has had its current name since 1862. Among other things, it runs where the Bornheimer Heide had been until the late 19th century , from which the first hot air balloon in Germany was launched in 1785 .

The "Untere Berger" (the lower part of Berger Strasse from Friedberger Anlage to Höhenstrasse ) is the venue for the Bergerstrasse Festival held annually in summer . At the Uhrtürmchen, located near the Bornheim Mitte underground station , the Bornheim weekly market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the upper Berger Straße is the scene of the Bornheim Wine Festival and the annual Bernemer Kerb (Bornheimer Kirmes ) .

Course of the road

Berger Strasse begins at Frankfurter Anlagenring , more precisely at Friedberger Anlage, and runs from there in a north-easterly direction. It has a very different street scene. In the lower Berger Strasse, in the direction of the city center, trendy bars alternated with small boutiques and specialty shops. Worth seeing in this section of Bethmannpark with that of Tom Koenigs baptized Garden of Heavenly Peace , one of the few Chinese gardens in Germany. At the beginning of 2015, this section was characterized by increasing vacancies . Between Merianplatz and Höhenstraße, Berger Straße is still characterized by shops and restaurants operated by sole proprietorships.

Between the Höhenstraße and the Bornheimer Fünffingerplätze , the Berger Straße was characterized until November 16, 2013 by a department store of the electronics company Saturn and shops of other chains, the St. Josefs Church , the Berger cinema and the traffic-calmed square around the clock tower, the Bornheim market square. Here, too, the vacancy rate and the decline in sales are now increasing. The upper Berger Straße is a traditional pub district with many former old apple wine restaurants. Half-timbered houses determine the picture there. Berger Straße ends, passing the SG Bornheim sports complex, as a footpath on the Seckbach gallery on the 661 federal motorway . In Seckbach, the Wilhelmshöher Straße joins.

Public transport

The U4 underground line has been running under Berger Strasse since 1980 . The two tunnels for the two directions of travel have been different than most other metro - tunnels not side by side but one above the other. The reason for this construction is the narrow width of the street. The U4 serves three stations on Berger Straße. The stations, which are otherwise designed in the same style, differ in their coloring. The Merianplatz underground station near the lower end of the street is tiled in various shades of green, the Höhenstraße underground station on Alleenring is designed in red, and the Bornheim Mitte underground station on Saalburgstraße is shining in yellow.
