Bornheim Mitte is a station of the Frankfurt U-Bahn . It is on the B line and is served by the U4 line. The train station is in the Bornheim district under Berger Straße . The station opened on May 31, 1980.

location

Bornheim Mitte station is located on the B-route used by the U4 between the Höhenstraße and Seckbacher Landstraße stations . Viewed from the city center, it is the third station on the so-called Bornheimer Linie .

Construction

Platform in the C level

Due to the narrow width of Berger Straße (around 17 meters), the two single-track tunnel tubes of the subway were not built next to each other, but on top of each other. This construction method, which is very complex due to the deep excavation pit and the existing groundwater, was used in two places in Frankfurt, namely here and in the similarly narrow Leipziger Straße in Bockenheim .

The station therefore consists of three underground levels:

  • the intermediate levels ("B-level") that are usual for Frankfurt underground stations, directly below the street level, where, among other things, the ticket machines are located. Such intermediate levels are located at both entrances.
  • the single-track upper platform level ("C level"), which is used in north direction,
  • the single-track lower platform level ("D-level"), which is used to the south.

The station was built using the cut-and-cover method . H. in an open, but mostly covered, excavation, the adjoining section tunnels in mining construction ( New Austrian Tunneling Method ).

architecture

The architecture of the station is kept relatively simple and largely corresponds to that of the other stations under Berger Straße. The designs come from the architect associations Wolfgang Bartsch , Anselm Thürwächter and Hans Weber , who work in Frankfurt v. a. are known for the Technical Town Hall , and Max Meid and Helmut Romeick (including the Hauptwache multi-storey car park and Taunusanlage 11 high-rise building ). In the design, the ceramic tiles in shades of yellow are particularly striking. The color concept comes from Friedrich Ernst von Garnier .
