Hammering Man

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hammering Man is a work of art by the American artist Jonathan Borofsky in various cities around the world. It depicts the moving silhouette of a worker who moves a hammer against a symbolic workpiece. The movement of the hammer itself is motor-driven so that there is no rapid hammering movement, but the hammer is moved just as slowly against the workpiece as it is lifted.

The work of art is a symbol for work, action and also as a symbol for solidarity with all people who work. The sculpture is available in different versions in some major cities around the world.

Each of the sculptures is different heights and has a different number on the back leg.

history

Jonathan Borofsky created his first Hammering Man in 1979 as part of an installation at the Paula Cooper Gallery . This sculpture was 3.4 meters high and made of black painted plywood. Like the other versions, this one already had a motor for the movable arm.

Borofsky intended from the start to create several versions of the sculpture and install them in different locations around the world. Both in closed rooms and in private collections as well as in public spaces.

Imitations

The imitation of the Hammering Man on Hülya-Platz, Frankfurt am Main. Original version.

A man-sized replica of this figure was erected on the occasion of a demonstration against neo-Nazis by a citizens' initiative on Hülya-Platz in Frankfurt-Bockenheim and left there after discussions in the local advisory board . The figure is intended as a memorial to commemorate the murder attempt in Solingen . It shows the Hammering Man , as with the hammer to a swastika strikes. With a crank you could do the movements yourself. The figure repeatedly fell victim to various attempts at destruction. In April 2007 it was dismantled and scrapped. It was recently badly damaged and rusted, so it was considered a danger to public safety. In the meantime the figure has been replaced by a successor.

Another imitation is in Eimeldingen in the front garden of a locksmith's shop, which apparently placed the sculpture directly at Bundesstraße 3 for advertising purposes .
