Tape Art describes art made from adhesive tapes . Different adhesive tapes with different structures, colors and shapes can be used.

history

Combination of Graffiti (Amok) and Tape Art ( Tape Over ) on a wall in front of the Klebeland in Berlin.

Tape Art arose out of the search for an alternative to spray cans as a sub-category in Urban Art in the 1960s. Tape art was primarily used originally in public urban spaces. Tape art is increasingly being discovered by the media and used by individuals in private interiors. After tape art was initially used by subversive individuals with the existing materials in public urban space, special artists tapes (adhesive tape for tape art) have now been developed.

In 2009 , El Bocho , an artist from Berlin, stuck adhesive tape on the wall of the Stadtbad Wedding as part of the “Urban Affairs Extended” exhibition and caused a sensation. The Heyne Art Factory in Offenbach am Main opened Europe's first group exhibition at the beginning of 2015, works by seven European tape artists and two collectives from Berlin were shown. Tape art artists such as Max Zorn are invited with their projects to renowned art fairs such as Art Basel Miami . The Polish artist Monika Grzymala , who lives in Berlin, exhibits her three-dimensional installations around the world in renowned galleries and museums such as the Kunsthalle Hamburg or the Albertina in Vienna.

In October 2016, the first international Tape Art Convention was held in Berlin - an exhibition in the Berlin gallery Neurotitan , in which not only the German artist collective Tape That but also well-known international artists such as Buff Diss, Slava Ostap, Benjamin Murphy and Max Zorn took part.

features

Tape art can be carried out almost silently, quickly and without unpleasant smells. The uncomplicated handling compared to graffiti makes tape art interesting for small or temporary urban art projects. Due to the material properties, protective measures such as masking or covering are not necessary. The relatively easy handling of the material means that tape art is also attracting increasing interest among private users. The fabric strips can be applied to various surfaces, such as stone, asphalt, wood, aluminum - dibond process, fabric or glass. Another advantage over conventional graffiti is that the material can be removed again.

material

Since tape art is a free art form, in principle any material can be used. However, well-suited materials have the following properties:

  • waterproof / water-resistant
  • flexible
  • colourfast
  • tearable by hand

A tissue tape is often used. In the meantime, materials with smooth surfaces are increasingly being used for more filigree work indoors. Special artist tapes are produced in different widths in fashionable and eye-catching colors from different brands. Different types are used for different substrates. In general, substrates should be as free of dust and grease as possible in order to ensure that the adhesive tape adheres well.

Tape art variations

Due to the fact that adhesive tape is very versatile and flexible, it invites you to experiment. For example, there are now a large number of people who make their wallets or cell phone cases individually from adhesive tape.

At the artistic level there are mainly interdisciplinary collaborations with artists from the graffiti scene. But the combination with digital art forms is also possible. Recently, a style has developed that is known as tape mapping . It's the literal fusion of tape art and video mapping, animating the tape art with visual effects.

Another variation of tape art is making sculptures. Here, the adhesive tape is shaped and glued together so that figures are created in 3D. Mostly so-called painter's tape, i.e. paper tape, is used for this.
