life and work

Monika Grzymala spent her early childhood in Poland. In 1980 she came to Germany with her family and initially lived in Hamburg .

After four years of training as a stone sculptor in Kaiserslautern , Monika Grzymala studied fine arts between 1994 and 2001 at the universities of Karlsruhe , Kassel and Hamburg . During her studies in Kassel in 1996 she was one of the founders of the Stellwerk Performance Gallery in the old waiting room of the Kulturbahnhof Kassel . After completing her studies with a diploma in humanities at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, she began with two-dimensional installations and went to New York in 2003 with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service . In 2005 she received the Dorothea Erxleben grant from the state of Lower Saxony and went to the Braunschweig University of Art , where she also received a teaching position.

She then worked as Artist in Residence at the Center for Experimental Art on Long Island, New York and at the Donald Judd Foundation in Marfa ( Texas ). She has received support and grants from the Art Fund Foundation in Bonn, the Academy of Arts in Berlin and a grant from the Henry Moore Foundation in Hertfordshire . The influential New York art collector Dian Woodner is one of her sponsors. In addition to her artistic work, Monika Grzymala was appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig (2012–2013) and the University of Applied Arts Vienna (2013–2014) and led numerous workshops.

She designed her first major installation in 2000 on the ice rink in Hamburg-Stellingen . For the walk-in installation One Degree Above Zero , she applied ten coats of paint one after the other and let them freeze. In her room installations, Monika Grzymala works with adhesive tapes , reinforced hand-made paper and paper tapes as well as with lead and metal cords. In the last 15 years she has created almost 50 two- and three-dimensional tape art room installations, using between three and ten kilometers of tape for each work. She exhibited these room installations at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum , the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Albertina in Vienna.

Monika Grzymala lives and works in Berlin. She frequently exhibits her installations in the Galerie Crone and participates in international art fairs such as ARCO Madrid .
