In her work, Katrin von Maltzahn examines the meanings of different sign systems. With her starting point in painting, she works across technologies. Since the mid-nineties she has developed a second focus in printmaking through close collaboration with the copper printer Niels Borch Jensen, Copenhagen. In the contemporary field of printmaking, she has contributed to giving printed works of art an autonomous status and treating them on the same level as unique pieces. This means that it is not primarily conceived in terms of printmaking categories from the 1960s (number of copies, democratic art), but rather as an adequate means of expressing artistic ideas.

Gerrit Gohlke wrote about her 2012 exhibition at the Brandenburgischer Kunstverein Potsdam: “Katrin von Maltzahn's exhibition 'Alphabet' shows a world of signs and drawing machines - which, under the artist's hand, break free from the familiar order. From the computer component to the library floor plan, the artist develops ciphers which, however, free themselves from their functions. In the end, the sign is stronger than the alphabet. "
