Dirk Dobke

Dirk Dobke (* 1966 in Neviges ) is a German art historian and curator .

Life

Dirk Dobke studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Hamburg with a focus on contemporary art and photography. He completed his studies in 1994 with a master's degree with a thesis on the photographer couple Bernd and Hilla Becher and also worked as a freelance photographer.

1997 Dobke was with a thesis on Dieter Roth with the title - "Melancholy Nippes Dieter Roth's early material objects and pictures (1960-75)" doctorate . Roth himself added sketches and comments to the manuscript. In January 1998 he appointed Dobke as curator of the Dieter Roth Foundation, which he co-founded, and of the Dieter Roth Museum.

Dobke was co-curator of the exhibition “Roth-Zeit, Eine Dieter Roth Retrospective”, the opening exhibition of the Schaulager in Basel (2003); further stations were: Museum Ludwig , Cologne (2003) and Museum of Modern Art (with PS1), New York (2004).

He is also active in art education and founded the artfinder gallery in Hamburg with Mathias Güntner in 2000 , from which he retired at the end of 2005. Since 2006 he has been in charge of the work archive of Berlin-based artist Sonja Alhäuser . He published various publications on the artists in charge as well as books with a photographic focus, e.g. B. 2016 the catalog raisonné “Classics of Photography” in the pen art.

Since 2010 he has been the managing director of the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg .
