history

Bad grave in Ohlsdorf

The stylus art association was founded in 1925 by the Hamburg elementary school teacher Johannes Böse . Böse came from the Hamburg teaching staff, who were very committed to art education and who had been greatly influenced by Alfred Lichtwark's work at the Hamburg Kunsthalle at the beginning of the 1900s . Lichtwark wanted to bring art closer to the citizen and tried to create an edition of inexpensive graphic sheets through the Society for Hamburg Art Friends , which he founded. He understood this as art education and art promotion at the same time. Böse took up this concept and founded the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg-Langenhorn , which was based in the Hamburg-Langenhorn elementary school, now the Fritz Schumacher School . Until his death in 1955 he ran the art association on a voluntary basis and was solely responsible. His daughter Gerda Böse (1910-1970) continued the association until she left in 1964. For the grave of Johannes Böse in the Ohlsdorf cemetery , Hans Martin Ruwoldt created the gravestone depicting a bird (grave location S 11-127, near Chapel 1).

Today the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung is a democratically run association with a board of directors, advisory board and a managing director. The graphic offer is selected by an appointed jury. According to the statutes, it wants to promote broad interest in the visual arts and at the same time encourage artists to do graphic work. Above all, the joy of collecting works of art should be awakened.

In addition, the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung regularly publishes original graphic sheets, which appear every six months. Here you can find historical sheets of old printing plates (usually from the estate of the artist concerned) alongside new and recent works by current artists. In the meantime, photographic works and multiples are also offered. The members choose from 35 to 40 graphics. The individual sheets are very inexpensive, which makes the choice much easier, especially since a basic principle of the selection is to familiarize the members with the latest trends in art development and sometimes brittle works. Here the art pedagogical approach from the founding of the art association is emphasized and continued.

In 2009, the stylus art association had around 4,400 members. New members are accepted according to vacancies. The waiting period was more than five years. The graphics elections in May and November each year take place in Hamburg and 84 other places in Germany. When joining the art association, each member makes a declaration of honor not to trade in the acquired works of art. If this obligation is disregarded, the board can expel the member.

In 2002 the stylus art association moved from Langenhorn to its new domicile in Seilerstraße in Hamburg-St. Pauli has moved and changed its name to Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg .
