Mapiri (not identical with the town of Santa Rosa de Mapiri ) is a country town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Mapiri is the central place of the Municipio Mapiri in the province of Larecaja . The village is located at an altitude of 635  m on the right bank of the Río Mapiri , whereby "Mapiri" in the language of the Matsiguenga - Asháninka (mapi = stone) is used to denote rivers whose riverbed consists of rubble and stone.

geography

Mapiri is located northeast of Lake Titicaca on the eastern edge of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Real in the lowlands of the Río Beni, one of the most important rivers of the Amazon lowlands.

The mean average temperature of the region is a good 23 ° C (see climate diagram), the annual precipitation is almost 1400 mm. The region has a less pronounced temperature profile, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only insignificantly between 21 ° C in June and July and just under 28 ° C in November and December, and the day and night temperatures also show only slight fluctuations. The monthly precipitation is between under 50 mm in the months of June and July and over 200 mm in December.

Transport network

Mapiri is 328 kilometers north of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz the partially paved national road Ruta 3 leads in a north-easterly direction 160 kilometers via Cotapata to Caranavi , from there branches off the unpaved Ruta 26 , which reaches Guanay after 70 kilometers and continues via Mapiri to Apolo . The piste between Guanay and Mapiri is only accessible in the dry season from May to September with a driving time of 3–4 hours. To the south-west of Mapiri there is an unpaved road connection to Santa Rosa de Mapiri , 17 kilometers away , via which the city of Sorata, 11 hours away, can be reached.

population

The population of the village has increased by about a fifth in the past two decades:

year Residents source
1992 2,388 census
2001 2 561 census
2012 3 446 census

The place is mainly inhabited by Aymara immigrants. In addition to two hostels at the Alojamiento Plaza, the town has a few small restaurants, a few shops and an ENTEL telephone office.

Río Mapiri

The Río Mapiri rises in the Desaguadero valley west of the Illampú massif . In Guanay , the Mapiri combines with the Challana and the Tipuani . Due to the extraction of the alluvial gold dust from the river sands of the Mapiri, the river is now highly poisoned by mercury , so that water birds and fish have become rare.

economy

Mapiri - a scaled-down version of the nearby Guanay - is determined by gold mining in the Rio Mapiri. Gold finds in the Río Mapiri and in the Río Tipuani have been reported since the times of the Inca . After the Europeans conquered the continent, the Spaniards subjugated the local population along these Yungas rivers and made them do forced labor. In the 19th century were along the Kaka River , the juice of rubber trees on a large scale for rubber production used. Today, small gold mining facilities can be found all along the river, although large finds have not been made since the 1980s. A claim along the river today rarely yields more than gold worth the equivalent of 10 US dollars. The Camino de Mapiri, which leads from Sorata to Mapiri, also brings a manageable number of trekking tourists to the place.
