From La Paz, the asphalt national road Ruta 2 leads 70 kilometers northwest to Huarina , from there the Ruta 16 branches off in a northerly direction , which reaches Achacachi after 23 kilometers . One kilometer after Achacachi, a road branches off to the northeast in the direction of Sorata , which after eight or another six kilometers crosses the villages of Warisata and Walata Grande . The road then leads over a pass height of 4,270 m and overcomes a height difference of 1,500 m over a distance of thirty kilometers to Sorata. After Sorata the road continues to Mapiri in the Yungas on the eastern edge of the Cordillera Central mountain range .

In the past, the population has repeatedly protested against the Bolivian central government through violent resistance. In the summer of 2005, for example, the city was blocked for weeks in protest against the planned privatization of the country's oil reserves.

tourism

Today the small town is the starting point for numerous sporting activities in the region, such as canyoning , mountain biking and sport fishing . But first and foremost, it is considered a climbing and hiking paradise. Paths from pre-Columbian times start from Sorata, such as the Illampú circular route into the mountain range of Illampú and Ancohuma , and the Mapiri path into the subtropical Yungas valleys northeast of La Paz. 10 kilometers from Sorata are the caves of San Pedro with interesting stalagmite and stalactite formations and a cave lake, as well as a considerable bat population.
