The mountain Ancohuma (also Jankhouma , Janq'uma ; Aymara : Janq'u Uma : white water) is located in the Andes in Bolivia east of Lake Titicaca and in the north of the Bolivian seat of government La Paz . At 6,425 m, it is the third highest mountain in Bolivia and the second highest in the Cordillera Real . It belongs to the Illampú massif . Sometimes the name Nevado de Sorata is used for the mountain range , after the small town of Sorata on the western slopes of the Illampú range.

height

Information about the height of the Ancohuma has fluctuated in the past between 6550 m and 6423 m, and at 6550 m the Ancohuma would be the highest mountain in Bolivia before the Sajama . In July 2005, a 23-person expedition from “Outpost Wilderness Adventure” and “Bear Creek Survey Service” ( Colorado , USA ) got to the bottom of these contradicting altitude information with the help of 14 kg GPS equipment. The result of their measurements is an altitude of 6425 m.

geography

The Cordillera Real consists of deep rocks from the Paleozoic Era , into which further plutonites penetrated during the Mesozoic Era up to the Tertiary period . These plutonites were exposed by erosion in the Tertiary and Quaternary and today form the peaks of the Illampú massif and the Illimani . The Ancohuma is covered with snow all year round, the snow line is at 5500 m.
