The heather ladybird ( Coccinella hieroglyphica ) is a beetle from the ladybird family (Coccinellidae).

description

The beetles are about four to five millimeters long. The wings are yellowish to brown, sometimes also yellowish-pink, and have up to seven black spots that can grow together to form irregularly shaped bands and large spots. The cover wings can also be colored completely black. The pronotum , head and legs are black, the front corners of the pronotum are brightly colored.

Occurrence

The beetles occur in Europe , in the north beyond the Arctic Circle , in the south to northern Italy, in Siberia and in North America . They live in heaths and moors up to an altitude of 1,200 meters, on various heather plants . Their populations vary greatly from year to year. They fly from May to October.

The beetles feed on aphids , but also on beetle larvae.
