The Municipio Sorata is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Sorata is one of eight municipalities in the province of Larecaja and is located in the central southern part of the province. It borders in the northwest with the municipality Tacacoma , in the west with the province Muñecas , in the southwest with the municipality Combaya and with the province Omasuyos , in the south and southeast with the municipality Guanay , in the east with the municipality Tipuani , and in the northeast with the municipality Mapiri .

The municipality measures up to 50 kilometers in north-south direction and up to 70 kilometers in east-west direction. The municipality has 200 localities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is Sorata with 2,788 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the southwestern part of the district.

The municipality of Sorata is located in the high mountain range of the Cordillera Real on the western foothills of the Illampú massif.
