Yani is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Yani is a central place in the canton of Yani in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Sorata in the province of Larecaja . Yani is a scattered settlement and is located at an altitude of 2930  m on a ridge northeast of Sorata .

Yani is located in the high mountain range of the Cordillera Real on the western foothills of the Illampú massif.

Due to the subtropical climate with average temperatures between 15 ° C and 20 ° C and an annual rainfall of 650 mm, the area is well suited for agricultural cultivation.

Transport network

Yani is located northwest of the government seat of La Paz and is about 142 kilometers by road from it.

From La Paz, the asphalt road Ruta 2 leads 70 kilometers northwest to Huarina , from there the Ruta 16 branches off in a northerly direction , which reaches Achacachi after 23 kilometers . One kilometer after Achacachi, a road branches off to the northeast towards Sorata, which after eight kilometers crosses the village of Warisata . The road then leads over a pass height of 4,270 m and overcomes a height difference of 1,500 m over a distance of thirty kilometers to Sorata. From Sorata it's another twelve kilometers in a northerly direction over numerous switchbacks to Yani .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Sorata 92.2 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
