The Municipio Mapiri is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The Municipio Mapiri is one of eight Municipios of the Larecaja Province and is located in the northwestern part of the province. It borders in the north on the province of Franz Tamayo , in the northwest on the province of Bautista Saavedra , in the west on the municipality Tacacoma , in the southwest and south on the municipality Sorata , in the southeast on the municipality Tipuani , and in the east on the municipality Guanay .

The Municipio Mapiri measures 60 kilometers from north to south and up to 40 kilometers from west to east. The municipality comprises 45 municipalities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is the city of Mapiri with 3,446 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the central part of the district.

The Municipio Mapiri is located northeast of Lake Titicaca on the eastern edge of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Real in the lowlands of the Río Beni, one of the most important rivers of the Amazon lowlands.
