The municipality of Guanay is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Guanay is one of eight municipalities in the province of Larecaja and is located in the eastern part of the province. It borders in the north on the province of Franz Tamayo , in the north-west on the municipality Mapiri , in the west on the municipality Tipuani and the municipality Sorata , in the southwest on the province Omasuyos , in the south on the province Los Andes , in the south-east on the province Murillo , to the east to the province of Caranavi , and to the northeast to the municipality of Teoponte .

The municipality measures up to 90 kilometers from north to south and up to 75 kilometers from west to east. The municipality has 59 localities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is the city of Guanay with 4,165 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the central part of the district, the second largest village is Carura with 922 inhabitants.

The municipality of Guanay is located northeast of Lake Titicaca on the eastern edge of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Real in the Bolivian Yungas lowlands in the catchment area of ​​the Río Beni , one of the important rivers of the Amazon lowlands.
