Franz Tamayo is one of twenty provinces of the Bolivian department of La Paz and is located in the northern part of the department. The province bears its current name in honor of Franz Tamayo Solares (1878–1956), a Bolivian poet, philosopher and politician. Originally this region belonged to the province of Caupolicán , which was founded by Simón Bolívar by decree of January 23, 1826 and which included today's province of Franz Tamayo, the province of Abel Iturralde , the department of Pando and neighboring regions in Brazil and Peru.

The province is located on the northeastern slopes of the Bolivian Cordillera Real and borders in the north with the province of Abel Iturralde , in the west with the Republic of Peru , in the south with the province of Bautista Saavedra and the province of Larecaja , in the southwest with the province Sud Yungas , and in the East to the Beni department .
The province extends between about 13 ° 53 'and 15 ° 17' south latitude and 67 ° 25 'and 69 ° 27' west longitude, it measures 140 kilometers from north to south, and up to 200 kilometers from west to east.
