Johanne Walhorn (born February 19, 1911 in Düsseldorf ; † May 24, 1995 in Ischia ) was a German lawyer and councilor for the city of Münster .

Life

Johanne Walhorn studied after school Jura , the study but had to cancel 1935th She lived in Münster from 1937 and in the same year married the journalist Ernst Walhorn, with whom she had two children. In 1945 she resumed her studies and passed the assessor examination in 1947 .

On March 29, 1949, Johanne Walhorn was admitted to the bar. Your admissions courts were the district court and the district court of Münster . On March 23, 1964, she was appointed a notary . She and two other lawyers shared an office on Domplatz in Münster. She remained professionally active until the end.

She died on May 24, 1995 at the age of 85 while on vacation in Ischia (Italy). Her grave is in the Lauheide forest cemetery in Münster.

Political activities and social engagement

From October 14, 1963 to February 3, 1975, Johanne Walhorn was a member of the Münster City Council for the SPD , which she was appointed to in the replacement procedure. During this time she was active in 23 committees and bodies in the city of Münster, such as the Committee for Family Issues, Economy and Advertising and the Commission for the Housing of the Homeless. On February 3, 1975, she resigned from her mandate.

After the Second World War, Johanne Walhorn re-established the German Housewives Association in Münster. From 1949 to 1970 - according to other sources until 1973 - she was chairman of the district group of the housewives' association in Münster (DHB). In 1951, the Münster housewife newspaper reappeared under its editorial staff . In recognition of her many years of service, she was made honorary chairman in 1970.

On October 13, 1951, she initiated the “meat strike”. The background to this was that in June 1951 the government had lifted tariff concessions for meat imports. Due to the reaction of the housewives' associations, the benefits were reintroduced.

In 1948 she was a co-founder of the Volksbühne in Münster and later worked as a member of the cultural council of the gymnastics community.

In 1956, on her initiative, the Anna-Krückmann-Haus eV association was established in Münster, an educational organization for women and parents, which she chaired until 1972.

In 1964 she built up the Münster district group of the German Parity Welfare Association . From 1964 to 1973 she was a member of the executive boards of the Münster district group and the NRW regional association of the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband.

In 1966 she founded the “ Meals on Wheels ” initiative in Münster .

In 1975 the consumer advice center was set up in Münster . Johanne Walhorn played a key role in setting it up. As early as May 30, 1972, she reported to the Münster City Council as a councilwoman on the establishment of the working group for consumer issues and pointed out the urgency of setting up a consumer advice center.

In 1950 she was elected to the permanent press committee of the German Association of Women Lawyers , founded in 1948 . In October 1990 Johanne Walhorn represented the German Association of Women Lawyers at the 25th Congress of FIDA ("Spanish Federacion Internacional de Abogadas", an international association of women lawyers that has had the status of advisor at the UN since 1954) in Cartagena , Colombia . The German Association of Women Lawyers was a member of FIDA, but Johanne Walhorn was also a personal member. In 1990 she founded the regional group Westphalia (Bielefeld / Münster) of the German Association of Women Lawyers, initially with 33 members.

Awards, honors

In 1972 she received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . On April 11, 1974, at the suggestion of the then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Heinz Kühn, she was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.

In 1989 she received the gold plaque of honor from the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband.

On October 25, 1993, she was awarded the Paulus plaque by the city of Münster for her services to the city . At the award ceremony, Johanne Walhorn gave an acceptance speech. The City Council of Münster had previously decided on the award without a dissenting vote. Johanne Walhorn was the third woman in the history of the city to receive this plaque. In 1993 she was the only woman besides eight men to receive this honor.

In 2005 in Münster was Erphoviertel of Johanne-Walhorn path named after her (decision of the district council Muenster Center of 12 April 2005).
