The Münster District Court building, which was built between 1875 and 1879, is located south of Schlossplatz . This three-story building was badly hit by Allied bombs on March 25, 1945 and burned to the ground. After the end of the Second World War , it was rebuilt and the remaining parts were included. The facade in particular was largely reconstructed based on the Italian Gothic model . The reconstruction lasted until October 1951. It has been a listed building since 1984.

In addition to this main building, the district court has rooms on the entire ground floor, the entire first floor and part of the second floor in the Münster public prosecutor's office building directly to the west and in the intermediate wing between the regional court and the district court.

history

The origins of the Münster District Court go back to 1815, when Münster came under the rule of Prussia after the liberation of Napoleon's rule . The Münster Regional and City Court, which was responsible for the city and the district , was founded. The original seat of the court was on Domplatz on the site of today's LWL State Museum for Art and Cultural History .

In 1849 it was converted into a district court, which was to last until 1879. The judicial district, however, remained the same. The Münster District Court was founded on October 1, 1879, through the uniform Reich Courts Constitution Act, which came into force at that time . At the same time, it moved into the new building on Schlossplatz , which at that time was still known as “Neuplatz” and which it shared with the newly established regional court. Initially, six judges worked at the court. After the building, which was badly damaged in World War II , was rebuilt, 17 judges were already working at the Münster District Court.

With the regional reform of January 1, 1975 in North Rhine-Westphalia and the dissolution of the Münster district, the district court in Münster was only responsible for the enlarged urban area of the city of Münster and the city of Greven . The latter moved to the district court district of Steinfurt in 1976 .

35 professional judges , 36 judicial officers and around 140 other employees work at the Münster District Court .
