The Friedberger Warte is one of the four waiting towers of the Frankfurt Landwehr built in the 14th century . It is in the north of Bornheim , one of the districts of Frankfurt am Main to the east of the center .

Architecture and history

Today's Friedberger Warte was built in 1478 in the late Gothic style instead of a watchtower already mentioned in 1350 as the last observation tower of the Frankfurter Landwehr on the Eulenberg, the highest point in Bornheim . The facility consists of a rectangular weir yard with a rectangular floor plan of 22 by 28 meters. On the west side is the guard house with kitchen and well room. The most striking component is the slender defense and watchtower with a roof covered with slate .

The Friedberger Warte was the scene of a military conflict only once: During the Narrow Kaldic War , the Frankfurters fought off imperial troops here in 1546 .

During the Thirty Years' War , the tower and fortified courtyard were set on fire by wandering Croatians in 1634. From 1637 the Friedberger Warte was rebuilt. It later served as a customs post and a fire watch . A popular cider bar has been located here since 1815 . The tower has served as a ventilation shaft for the sewer system since 1885 .

For years, the control room was in the middle of a roundabout on Friedberger Landstrasse leading north from Friedberger Tor towards Bad Vilbel . From this roundabout, the Homburger Landstrasse, which leads from there in a north-northwest direction, also branches off .

The unsatisfactory urban planning situation at this point - the control room occupies an island location in the middle of busy streets - was partially remedied from 2011 to 2012 with the construction of line 18 of the Frankfurt am Main tram , Rohrbachstraße – Friedberger Landstraße – Gravensteiner Platz , which is the tram line in operation since December 2011. Then the area around the control room was redesigned into a multifunctional space for weekly markets and the like; the construction work was completed in summer 2017.
